Christian Horner says Red Bull will copy Aston Martin aero component if it's legal

The Aston Martin F1 Team are set to be copied by every team on the grid, after introducing an innovative new rear-wing at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll had rear-wings that resembled the 2021 cars, which had considerably higher downforce than the current generation.

Both drivers had additions to their endplates, something which has caught plenty of attention in the paddock.

McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl revealed that the Woking-based team will be looking into Aston Martin’s rear-wing design “next week”, whereas Red Bull’s Christian Horner joked that “for once” it won’t be Aston Martin doing the copying.

“I guess if it complies with the regs, that’s the main thing,” said Horner.

“It opens up another avenue that’s interesting. And maybe for once we will copy something off to an Aston Martin rather than the other way around,” he smiled.

Aston Martin were dubbed the ‘green Red Bull’ after the Spanish Grand Prix, where they introduced practically an entire new car which suspiciously resembled the RB18.

The Alpine F1 Team are also interested in the AMR22’s new rear-wing, with Alpine’s Alan Permane predicting that if the design is faster, then “you’ll see nine more”.

“If it’s quicker, you’ll see nine more of them, I imagine,” he said.

“I get your point about the intent of the regs but we just want to go fast and be reliable so that’s really for the FIA and Formula 1 to work out.”

The main question on the paddock’s lips, though, is whether Aston Martin’s new rear-wing is legal.

Ferrari’s Laurent Mekies also agreed that “everyone” will try to replicate what the British team have done, especially if the FIA deems the innovative design as legal.

“If the FIA says it’s legal, then everyone tries it.”

Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack has absolutely no doubt that what his team have designed is legal, after explaining that whilst the wing was in development, the team “were in touch” with the sport’s governing body.

“We were in touch with the FIA all along the development to understand if this is something that will be accepted,” he revealed.

Whilst it appears to be fine with the FIA, there is a chance that the other teams may rally together to get Aston Martin’s design banned.

Krack, however, has no concern of a “supermajority”.

“I’m not concerned about a supermajority or anything.”
